It’s not unusual for a tooth that has undergone trauma or has been broken to darken or become discolored. The same is true for a tooth that has been overcome by tooth decay and infection. Even after a root canal, this discoloration can remain.

While conventional teeth whitening is not successful in these cases, Dr. Sarraf will whiten the tooth from the inside out using a technique called internal bleaching. Here’s how it works:

  • The tooth will be isolated to protect the surrounding teeth.
  • The decay that has caused the discoloration will be removed and replaced with a bleaching agent. And the tooth will be temporarily sealed.
  • Once the endodontist believes the tooth has reached the desired shade, the bleaching agent will be removed and the tooth will be sealed.

Who is a Candidate?

Almost anyone who has a discolored or dark tooth due to trauma or a root canal treatment may be a candidate for internal tooth bleaching. If you have taken care of any dental concerns and would like to fully restore your tooth, contact Eagle Endodontics today to see if you are a good candidate.

Frequently Asked Questions About Internal Bleaching

Is internal bleaching painful?

No, internal bleaching is not generally painful. Although occasionally a patient may have slight sensitivity or a discharge of the bleaching agent which could cause a little discomfort, this is not common.

How long does it take to see the results of internal bleaching?

It will vary depending on how bad the staining is, but typically the bleaching solution may be left for a couple of days or even a couple of weeks before a follow-up. Then your endodontist will decide if it needs a little more time or not. When the procedure is completed, results can last, on average, 5 to 7 years!

Will internal bleaching weaken the tooth?

Internal bleaching is a non-invasive procedure that has a very high success rate without any damaging effects on the tooth’s hard or soft tissues. Should you have any concerns about whether this procedure is right for you, feel free to contact the professionals at Eagle Endodontics.

Will traditional teeth whitening be just as effective?

No. Traditional teeth whitening treatments focus on the outside of the tooth. It won’t impact the discoloration that stems from inside the tooth.
