Pre and Post Surgical Instructions


Before Appointment:

  1. If necessary, check with your doctor as you will need to, STOP taking ASPIRINBLOOD THINNERS AND VITAMIN E seven days prior to surgery.
  2. Take other medication as prescribed.
  3. Please have a good meal prior to your surgery appointment.

Women: If any antibiotics have been prescribed and you are taking Birth Control Pills, alternate birth control methods must be used for at least one month.

After Appointment:

  1. Do NOT lift or pull lip to examine surgical area, because repeated irritations may delay healing!  No strenuous exercise or heavy lifting 24 hours after surgery appointment.
  2. Recommend to start taking Motrin 800mg every 8 hours for the 2 days after surgery.  This will also minimize swelling.
  3. Slight swelling and skin discoloration is NORMAL.
  4. In order to minimize swelling, apply an ice pack over the surgical area with gentle pressure, 20 minutes on -20 minutes off, for period of 3-4 hours.
  5. Adequate food and fluid Intake following surgery is most important. Soft foods are best.  Suggestions: ice cream, Jello-O, pudding, and yogurt. Avoid: crusty, hard and hot foods.  Try to chew on the opposite side of the surgery site.
  6. Soft toothbrush may be carefully used in the areas of the mouth that were not involved in the surgical site.  Avoid rinsing during the first 24 hours.
  7. After 24hrs use the Peridex rinse with q-tip to gently clean the surgical site.   
  8. If possible sleep with your head slightly elevated the first night following surgery.
  9. Do Not Smoke for the first 24 hours following the surgery appointment.
  10. Any unusual symptoms such as excessive bleeding, swelling, or elevated temperature should be reported immediately.
  11. Slight oozing or bleeding is normal for the first 24 hours.  If bleeding persists, please call.  Do not apply heat under any circumstances.  Mild discomfort and swelling following surgery is normal.  If you have been given a prescription, take as directed.  Please call the morning after the surgery to report your progress.

Reminders: do not take any Aspirin or medications containing aspirin and notify our office if any problems develop with any of the medications prescribed.
